Payroll & Benefits Assistant Manager

About the role

This role offers an experienced payroll professional the chance to own end‑to‑end payroll and benefits administration for a large, complex workforce. Working as the deputy to the Payroll Manager, you will be involved in transformation projects, process improvements and senior stakeholder engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Process monthly payroll from start to finish.
• Manage starters, leavers and employee changes.
• Administer overtime, shift payments and statutory payments.
• Handle salary sacrifice arrangements and pension administration.
• Perform payroll reconciliations and validation checks.
• Investigate and resolve payroll queries from employees and managers.
• Produce payroll reports and management information.
• Support year‑end processes, including P60s and statutory reporting.
• Liaise with HMRC, pension providers and third‑party suppliers.
• Assist with payroll system improvements, testing and future projects.
• Deputise for the Senior Payroll Manager when required.

Required profile

• Significant experience delivering end‑to‑end payroll independently.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, PAYE, NI and statutory payments.
• Experience with MHR iTrent payroll and time & attendance systems.
• Background in administering pensions and auto‑enrolment.
• Excellent payroll reconciliation and audit abilities.
• Advanced Excel proficiency.
• Strong attention to detail, organisational skills and the confidence to influence stakeholders.
• CIPP qualification (or studying towards) is desirable.
• Experience of payroll system implementation or testing is a plus.
• Experience with shift‑based or operational workforces is advantageous.
