Plant Genetic Engineer – Crop Biotechnology

About the role

We are seeking a hands‑on Plant Genetic Engineer to join an early‑stage biotech spin‑out from the University of Manchester. You will work at the bench designing and executing molecular biology experiments that develop cytoplasmic traits for major crops, contributing directly to sustainable agriculture and food security.

Key responsibilities

• Design and perform plant molecular biology experiments, including gene editing and transformation.
• Develop and optimise protocols for chloroplast and mitochondrial genome engineering.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary R&D team to deliver cytoplasmic traits across multiple crop species.
• Generate and analyse data, and communicate findings to the founding team.

Required profile

• PhD (or equivalent experience) in plant science or a related discipline.
• Strong hands‑on experience in plant molecular biology.
• Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced, early‑stage environment.

Required skills

• Plant molecular biology techniques.
• Gene editing methods (e.g., CRISPR‑Cas).
• Plant transformation protocols.
• Experience with crop species such as wheat, maize, tomato or potato (nice to have).
