Research Associate – Syriac Studies (Postdoctoral)

About the role

The University of Manchester is hiring a postdoctoral Research Associate to join the ERC‑funded ‘Gesius’ project, which aims to recover lost Galenic works through a mixed‑method approach. You will work directly with five Gesius palimpsests, focusing on the Syriac undertext.

Key responsibilities

• Transcribe erased Syriac text from palimpsests.
• Translate Syriac material into English.
• Analyse the historical and linguistic context of the translations.
• Collaborate within a multidisciplinary research team.
• Prepare research outputs suitable for peer‑reviewed publication.

Required profile

• PhD (or equivalent) in Syriac Studies or a closely related field, completed by the application deadline.
• Excellent command of Syriac language.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
• Academic degree of at least a high 2:1 (or Merit) at undergraduate level.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Digital Humanities tools, specifically SketchEngine.
• Experience in corpus linguistics methods.
