Senior VAT Consultant

About the role

As a Senior VAT Consultant you will join NHS Shared Business Services to provide specialist VAT advice to NHS organisations across the UK. Working in a collaborative team, you will help clients navigate complex legislation, reduce risk and maximise value.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver VAT consultancy services including Contracted‑Out Services reviews, partial exemption reviews, business and non‑business assessments, capital project reviews, output tax reviews and contract analysis.
• Provide expert advice on HMRC NHS VAT guidance and ensure statutory compliance.
• Prepare clear technical VAT reports and client communications.
• Identify and develop new business opportunities and support the sale of VAT consultancy services.
• Manage small VAT projects or workstreams, ensuring timely delivery and high client satisfaction.
• Deliver VAT training sessions and seminars for clients and internal teams.

Required profile

• Extensive experience of NHS VAT and HMRC guidance.
• Strong technical knowledge of Contracted‑Out Services (Section 41), Primary Care Network VAT and government bodies VAT rules (Section 33).
• Proven experience delivering VAT consultancy within a recognised consulting environment.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legislation.
• Commercial awareness and experience contributing to sales activity.

Required skills

• Advanced Microsoft Excel.
• Familiarity with digital tax filing systems such as Making Tax Digital.
