Software Engineer – Python & Java (Maritime R&D)

About the role

We are looking for a Software Engineer with strong Python and Java expertise to drive Maritime Internal Research & Development (IRAD) within our National Security & Defence division. Based in Farnborough with flexible remote options, you will help turn cutting‑edge AI, autonomy and machine‑learning concepts into operational software solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop software requirements and deliver robust solutions.
• Contribute to architecture and design baselines.
• Rapidly prototype and iterate to meet mission‑focused use cases.
• Implement software to quality, safety and security standards.
• Integrate bespoke and COTS products and configure toolchains.
• Model and simulate software behaviour, demo capabilities and incorporate feedback.
• Manage change, releases and technical risk.
• Liaise with UK‑wide and global colleagues, suppliers and end‑users.
• Collaborate closely with systems engineering and test teams.

Required profile

• Strong foundation in software development with a passion for delivering assured solutions.
• Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC) and sole UK nationality.
• Full‑time, permanent availability with immediate impact.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python and Java (experience with C++ and JavaScript desirable).
• Experience in Agile development environments.
• Familiarity with Secure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
• Hands‑on with tools such as Jira, Bitbucket, JFrog, Ansible, Grafana, Splunk, Confluence and Kubernetes.
• Design and implementation of service‑oriented and micro‑services architectures.
• Containerisation experience, preferably Docker.
• Use of automated testing frameworks and tools.
