Sustainability Manager

About the role

The Sustainability Manager will lead the development and delivery of Great Places Housing Association’s Sustainability and Decarbonisation Strategies. This role focuses on decarbonising homes, improving energy performance, reducing environmental impact, and supporting residents to live in warmer, healthier, and more affordable homes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, support and develop a high‑performing cross‑functional team.
• Develop, maintain and deliver the organisation’s Sustainability and Decarbonisation strategy aligned with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements.
• Design and manage programmes to improve energy efficiency of existing homes, including retrofit planning, fabric‑first interventions, low‑carbon heating, renewable technologies and climate‑resilience measures.
• Analyse stock condition, EPC, energy consumption and resident insight data to set priorities, model options, track performance and inform long‑term investment decisions.
• Secure and manage external funding, prepare bids and ensure grant compliance.
• Engage with residents and communities to communicate projects, reduce fuel poverty and improve wellbeing.
• Provide expert advice on sustainability, decarbonisation and environmental performance to colleagues, contractors and senior leaders.
• Develop policies, procedures and performance measures that embed environmental responsibility across procurement, repairs, investment, development and office operations.

Required profile

• Proven experience developing and delivering sustainability, environmental, energy‑efficiency or decarbonisation plans, preferably within housing, property, construction or the public/not‑for‑profit sector.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a team, set clear objectives and support performance and development.
• Strong understanding of sustainability issues affecting housing associations, including retrofit, fuel poverty, energy performance and net‑zero targets.
