Consultant Physician – NHS Highland

About the role

The NHS Highland team at Fort William is preparing a new hospital and seeks two Consultant Physicians to help shape its future. This full‑time position involves delivering high‑quality general medical care within a community hospital setting, with opportunities to develop specialist interests and contribute to teaching and research.

Key responsibilities

• Provide acute and rehabilitation medical care across the 21‑bed Combined Assessment Unit, high‑dependency unit and 15‑bed mixed ward.
• Collaborate with specialist nurses, junior doctors and undergraduate students in teaching and mentorship.
• Participate in research projects with the University of the Highlands and Islands and Aberdeen University.
• Develop and maintain links with the Scottish Rural Health Partnership and other regional specialists.
• Support the day‑to‑day operational management of the hospital.

Required profile

• Registered on the General Medical Council Specialist Register with a licence to practise, or within six months of obtaining a CCT in General Medicine.
• Broad experience in general medicine and strong communication and problem‑solving abilities.
• Interest in geriatric medicine is desirable.
• Willingness to work flexibly, including part‑time or varied hours.

Required skills

• Clinical competence in acute and rehabilitation medicine.
• Ability to work within an integrated multidisciplinary team.
