Head of Compliance – IFA Firm (SMF16/SMF17)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Head of Compliance to lead the SMF16 (Compliance Oversight) and SMF17 (Money Laundering Reporting Officer) functions for a growing boutique Independent Financial Adviser firm. The successful candidate will embed a pragmatic, business‑focused compliance culture while ensuring the firm meets the highest regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and present Consumer Duty annual reports.
• Produce AML annual reports and fulfil MLRO duties.
• Design and deliver risk‑based compliance monitoring programmes.
• Conduct advice file reviews and provide constructive feedback.
• Complete and submit RMAR returns.
• Develop, implement and continuously improve compliance policies, procedures and controls.
• Maintain accurate regulatory records and management information.
• Manage complaints across all areas of financial advice.
• Make and document Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).
• Support GDPR compliance and data governance.

Required profile

• Minimum five years of SMF16 and/or SMF17 experience within a well‑established IFA firm.
• Proven track record of building compliance frameworks that support commercial growth.
• Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning or equivalent, plus relevant compliance qualifications.
• Ongoing CPD with regular engagement in FCA publications and industry forums.
