Head of Estates – Healthcare Facilities Management

About the role

The Head of Estates will lead the hard facilities management and engineering services for a large, complex healthcare estate that includes historic and modern buildings. Reporting directly to the Chief Finance Officer, this senior position is responsible for safe, compliant, and efficient operation of critical infrastructure that supports patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Lead day‑to‑day delivery of engineering services across the estate, ensuring safety and efficiency.
• Oversee planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, statutory compliance and contractor management.
• Maintain reliability of critical systems such as electrical, mechanical, water hygiene, fire safety and medical gas infrastructure.
• Manage an estates budget of approximately £8 million, ensuring financial control and value for money.
• Ensure compliance with legislation, Healthcare Technical Memoranda (HTMs), health & safety regulations and industry best practice.
• Lead procurement, contract management and performance monitoring of contractors.
• Provide operational and technical input for refurbishment and capital projects.
• Maintain risk management procedures, including Permit‑to‑Work systems and risk registers.
• Utilise CAFM systems to monitor performance, compliance and effectiveness.
• Build strong relationships with clinical teams, senior stakeholders, contractors and external partners.

• Strong engineering background with experience in healthcare estates.

• Proven ability to balance operational delivery, compliance and long‑term planning.
