Scientific Adviser – Fire Science Team

About the role

We are seeking a motivated, self‑sufficient scientist to join the Fire Science Team at Bureau Veritas in London. The role provides high‑quality scientific support and training to emergency services and industrial clients, including on‑call duties for the London Fire Brigade and other UK fire and rescue services.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific advice on fire incidents involving hazardous materials, covering planning, PPE selection, monitoring equipment deployment, decontamination and inter‑agency liaison.
• Investigate fire causes and spread both on‑site and in the laboratory, working with specialist fire service personnel.
• Analyse accidents and equipment failures as part of multidisciplinary teams to improve safety.
• Deliver technical training to fire services and other clients on relevant scientific disciplines.
• Prepare and deliver scientific reports, witness statements and briefing documents.

Required profile

• Excellent organisational, planning and multi‑tasking abilities with strong attention to detail.
• Knowledge of hazardous material properties (including radionuclides) and experience using detection, identification and monitoring equipment.
• Ability to produce technical reports and manage operational/commercial issues.
• Physically fit to work in challenging environments and wear fire‑brigade PPE (training provided).
• Self‑motivated, resilient and able to work independently or within a team.
