Legal Officer – HM Courts & Tribunals Service

About the role

The Legal Officer will work within the First‑tier Tribunal Immigration and Asylum Chamber at the Newport Regional Hearing Centre. This office‑based position supports the delivery of justice by managing complex case work and ensuring timely progression of appeals across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake case assessment and management activities to advance caseloads.
• Make informed, delegated judicial decisions on appeals under supervision.
• Liaise with internal HMCTS colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure effective administration of tribunals.
• Identify and remove barriers to case progression, promoting access to justice.

Required profile

• Ability to reflect on issues and take an impartial, evidence‑based approach.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with a wide range of court users and stakeholders.
• Capacity to work independently while collaborating with a broader team.

Required skills

• Law degree or demonstrable equivalent technical experience, showing decision‑making aptitude within a defined framework.
