Manufacturing Automation Engineer

About the role

This is a hands‑on engineering position within a well‑established UK engineering organisation that designs and manufactures advanced systems for defence and industrial applications. You will lead automation projects from concept through to commissioning, supporting new robotic systems and continuous improvement in a modern manufacturing environment.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and implement automation opportunities across welding, fabrication and assembly operations.
• Specify, install and commission capital equipment such as robotic welding cells, CNC machinery and material‑handling systems.
• Manage equipment installation, commissioning and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
• Develop and optimise robotic programmes and PLC‑controlled automation.
• Drive continuous‑improvement initiatives to boost productivity, quality and process stability.
• Conduct FMEAs, risk assessments and maintain up‑to‑date manufacturing documentation.
• Support Design for Manufacture (DfM) activities on new product introduction projects.
• Ensure compliance with health & safety, environmental and quality standards.

Required profile

• HND or degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
• Proven experience delivering automation projects in a manufacturing setting.
• Strong knowledge of industrial robotics and PLC control systems.
• Familiarity with automated welding, assembly or machining processes.
• Understanding of Lean Manufacturing and continuous‑improvement methodologies.
• Knowledge of machinery safety standards (PUWER, CE/UKCA).
• Project‑management or continuous‑improvement qualifications (e.g., PRINCE2, Six Sigma, Agile) are a plus.
