Mechanical Engineering Placement – Optical & Satellite Communications

About the role

Join Airbus Central Research & Technology in Filton to work on cutting‑edge optical and satellite communication solutions for airborne and spaceborne platforms. You will contribute to advanced research, prototype development and field testing while collaborating with partners across the UK, Europe and the US.

Key responsibilities

• Design and produce 3D‑printed and CNC‑machined parts for prototype communication systems.
• Write, test and debug software supporting hardware integration.
• Integrate hardware components and assist with laboratory and outdoor field trials.

Required profile

• Active enrolment in an engineering degree (Mechanical, Electronics or RF preferred) and must remain an undergraduate for the placement duration.
• Demonstrated mechanical design capability using CAD tools.
• Strong teamwork, written and oral communication skills and ability to work independently.

Required skills

• Mechanical design using Autodesk, Fusion 360 or FreeCAD.
• 3D printing and CNC machining techniques.

• Salary of £24,246 per year (35 hours/week).
