Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well‑established engineering business in Birmingham. The role involves leading the design and industrialisation of valve and hydraulic products from concept through to production.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop valves, hydraulic components and mechanical assemblies.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings in line with BS8888 standards.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation, specifications and design records.
• Perform engineering calculations, including pressure and flow analysis using MathCAD and hand methods.
• Support product industrialisation, ensuring designs are optimised for manufacture and assembly.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, production and quality teams to deliver robust products.
• Modify existing products to improve performance, reliability and manufacturability.
• Assist with prototype development, testing and validation activities.
• Liaise with suppliers, customers and internal stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle.
• Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations and customer requirements.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years of experience in senior mechanical design or a similar role.
• Proven experience in the valve and/or hydraulics industry.
• Strong 3D CAD capability; SolidWorks experience is beneficial.
• Excellent design and draughting skills working to BS8888 standards.
• Solid understanding of pressure and flow calculations.
• Basic knowledge of FEA principles and hand calculations.
• Familiarity with MathCAD is advantageous.
• Good grasp of manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles.
