Software Developer

About the role

The Home Office is looking for a Software Developer to join its digital team. You will design, build and improve software components that support government services, working under the guidance of senior engineers and following test‑driven, secure coding practices.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver secure, reliable and scalable software for the team.
• Design new features using appropriate tools and standards, prototyping where needed.
• Report on system performance, support testing activities and keep documentation up to date.
• Maintain and enhance services you have delivered, balancing development with operational duties.
• Collaborate with other engineers to improve CI/CD pipelines and testing approaches.
• Contribute to the Home Office digital community, adhering to accessibility, GDS service standards and internal best practices.

Required profile

• Ability to work under senior guidance while taking ownership of tasks.
• Willingness to learn new technologies and follow the Home Office technical standards.
• Eligibility for Security Check (SC) clearance, requiring at least 3‑5 years UK residency.
• Commitment to an open, positive approach and continuous skill development.
