Software Engineer (Backend-Focused) – 12‑Month Fixed Term

About the role

We are seeking a Backend‑focused Software Engineer to join a small, high‑impact data science team that operates at the intersection of software engineering, satellite data and climate research. The role is a 12‑month fixed‑term contract based in Edinburgh with hybrid/remote flexibility, offering the chance to work on cloud‑hosted tools that help scientists understand environmental change.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain and support cloud‑hosted applications.
• Implement algorithms defined by data‑science and research teams.
• Develop and maintain internal and external web services and REST APIs.
• Work with existing codebases, contributing to ongoing improvements.
• Participate in code reviews and CI/CD processes.
• Support cloud infrastructure and internal IT systems.
• Manage your own workload and collaborate flexibly within a small team.

Required profile

• 2+ years of professional software‑engineering experience.
• Pragmatic, curious mindset with a willingness to learn new domains.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team.

Required skills

• Strong Python development.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Designing and implementing REST APIs.
• Version control and CI/CD using Git.
• Familiarity with Docker and modern CI/CD tooling (desirable).
• JavaScript/TypeScript, React or Next.js (desirable).
• Experience with cloud platforms, particularly GCP (desirable).
• Linux systems administration or automation tools (desirable).
