Teaching Assistant – Support Young Adults with Complex Needs

About the role

This long‑term, full‑time Teaching Assistant role is based in a specialist post‑16 college in Northfield, Birmingham. You will work with young adults aged 19‑25 who have complex SEND needs, helping them develop independence, communication and life‑skills.

Key responsibilities

• Support students with profound and multiple learning difficulties throughout the college day.
• Assist with personalised learning programmes and activities.
• Encourage communication, independence and social development.
• Provide respectful personal care and follow manual handling procedures when required.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists and wider support staff.
• Contribute to a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment.

Required profile

• Experience supporting children or young people with complex SEND needs.
• Previous work in a specialist school, college or care environment.
• Understanding of communication difficulties, physical needs and learning disabilities.
• Patient, caring and flexible approach to individual needs.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
• Ability to commit to a long‑term role starting September 2026.

Required skills

• Manual handling training (desirable).
• Experience of providing personal care (desirable).
