Advisory Lawyer for Government

About the role

You will work alongside legal professionals across UK Government departments, including Ministers and senior officials, providing legal advice, guidance and managing a caseload of matters. The position offers exposure to a wide range of legal areas such as litigation, advisory, commercial, employment and EU legislation, contributing directly to public policy and society.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clear, balanced legal advice to Government departments and officials.
• Draft and review legislation, policy documents and contractual arrangements.
• Handle a diverse caseload covering litigation, commercial and employment matters.
• Collaborate with Ministers, departmental officials and other legal teams.
• Adapt to varied legal specialisms and move between advisory, litigation, employment and commercial work as needed.

Required profile

• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Ability to think strategically and creatively about complex legal issues.
• Strong judgement, analytical skills and confidence to deliver persuasive advice.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively at pace.
• Excellent communication skills to explain complex matters clearly.
• For roles based in London, DV security clearance may be required.
