Agency Family Court Adviser (FCA) – Work After First Hearing (Chelmsford)

About the role

We are seeking experienced Family Court Advisers to join Cafcass in Chelmsford on the Work After First Hearing service. The role combines office‑based work, visits to children across Essex and remote days, supporting both Private and Public Law cases.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct assessments and engage directly with children to represent their wishes in court.
• Prepare Section 7 reports for Private Law cases where the first hearing has not resolved arrangements.
• Act as an independent Children’s Guardian in Public Law cases, ensuring the child’s welfare is central.
• Provide oral evidence in court and produce high‑quality written reports.
• Collaborate with social workers, solicitors and other professionals to reach safe outcomes.

Required profile

• Qualified social worker, registered with Social Work England.
• Minimum 2‑3 years post‑qualified experience in children and families social care.
• Recent experience of Private and/or Public Law work.
• Confidence and competence in court settings.
• Strong assessment, case analysis and communication abilities.

Required skills

• Robust risk assessment.
• Mediation techniques.
• Oral advocacy in court.
• High‑standard written report production.
