Applied AI Engineer, Quants

About the role

OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineering team is looking for an Applied AI Engineer to work with quantitative investment and trading firms. You will partner with researchers and engineers to bring OpenAI models and Codex into their research, data analysis and software development workflows, turning prototypes into reliable production systems.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with quant firms to identify AI opportunities, design, build and deploy solutions that deliver measurable business outcomes.
• Write and debug Python code, create evaluation harnesses, reference implementations and production accelerators.
• Make technical decisions covering models, retrieval, tools, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security and governance.
• Diagnose complex integration challenges, reproduce failures, test hypotheses and drive resolutions.
• Lead workshops and hands‑on sessions to help quantitative researchers apply OpenAI models effectively.
• Translate deployment experience into reusable architectures, tooling, playbooks and product requirements.

Required profile

• Background in quantitative research, development or a strong understanding of how quant teams operate.
• Hands‑on experience with large language models (e.g., Codex) and building AI applications.
• Demonstrated contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging or production engineering.
• Highly proficient in Python and comfortable building research tools and data workflows.
• Rigorous approach to evaluating statistical or machine‑learning systems and applying that discipline to AI outputs.
• Experience navigating enterprise production requirements such as integration, reliability, observability, security, data governance and cost management.
