Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) – Gateshead Council

About the role

Gateshead Council is seeking a qualified Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join its dedicated team on a temporary basis. The role offers a premium hourly rate and a consistent weekday schedule, working from the Council Civic Centre.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct Mental Health Act assessments in line with current legislation and statutory guidance.
• Collaborate with health professionals, emergency services and partner agencies to safeguard individuals in mental health crises.
• Make informed decisions that promote the least restrictive options and protect service users.
• Maintain accurate case records and complete all required statutory documentation.
• Deliver person‑centred interventions while adhering to best practice standards.

Required profile

• Qualified Social Worker with a recognised Social Work qualification.
• Current AMHP qualification and approval.
• Proven experience undertaking Mental Health Act assessments.
• Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and related legislation.
• Excellent communication, assessment and decision‑making abilities.

• £50.00 per hour rate.
• Fixed shift: 1:00 pm – 9:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
• Temporary contract with immediate start.
• Supportive team and dedicated consultant throughout the assignment.
