About the role

The Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) will work within Coventry City Council to carry out statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983 and related legislation. The role involves coordinating assessments, making independent decisions on compulsory admission, and safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of individuals with mental disorder.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake assessments under the Mental Health Act and associated legislation.
  • Coordinate Mental Health Act assessments with medical practitioners and other professionals.
  • Decide on applications for detention, exercising independent professional judgment.
  • Protect individuals’ human rights and legal safeguards throughout the assessment process.
  • Consider and recommend less restrictive alternatives to hospital admission.
  • Complete comprehensive risk assessments and develop risk management plans.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists and community services.
  • Liaise with families, carers, advocacy services, police, ambulance services and other partner agencies.
  • Prepare accurate, timely and legally compliant reports and documentation.
  • Attend court hearings, tribunals, safeguarding meetings and case conferences as required.
  • Participate in an out‑of‑hours AMHP rota where applicable.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of mental health legislation, case law and professional guidance.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement and professional training.

Required profile

  • Registered Approved Mental Health Professional able to exercise statutory powers.
  • Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and related legislation.
  • Ability to make independent decisions regarding compulsory admission.
  • Commitment to protecting human rights and applying the least restrictive options.
  • Willingness to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure (DBS) check.
  • Registration with Remedy Recruitment Group for locum positions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report preparation and multi‑agency liaison.
