Assistant Head of Year – Secondary School (Temporary)

About the role

The school is looking for a proactive Assistant Head of Year to join its pastoral team from September 2026. This full‑time, temporary position will support the Head of Year in promoting student wellbeing, behaviour, attendance and engagement across a designated year group.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Head of Year with day‑to‑day pastoral management of students.
• Build strong relationships with pupils, staff, parents and carers.
• Monitor and intervene on student behaviour, attendance and punctuality.
• Contribute to behaviour‑management strategies and a positive learning environment.
• Provide emotional and practical support to students facing challenges.
• Collaborate with teaching staff, safeguarding leads and external agencies.
• Support safeguarding processes and ensure policy compliance.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a secondary school or similar educational setting.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Calm, resilient and empathetic approach.
• Ability to manage challenging behaviour effectively.
• Good organisational and administrative abilities.
• Genuine passion for supporting young people.
• Right to work in the UK and an enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one).
• Two professional references (preferably child‑related).
