Audit Assistant Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced auditor to join an independent accountancy practice in Manchester as an Audit Assistant Manager. The role offers greater responsibility, regular client contact and a clear progression path within a supportive environment. You will work with a varied portfolio of owner‑managed businesses, growing companies and established organisations.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of audit clients and deliver multiple assignments simultaneously.
• Plan audit assignments, defining scope, timetable, staffing and key risk areas.
• Lead audit fieldwork in the Manchester office and at client sites.
• Supervise, support and coach junior audit team members.
• Review audit files and working papers, providing feedback and resolving outstanding points.
• Monitor budgets, deadlines and work‑in‑progress, raising issues as needed.
• Prepare and review statutory financial statements where required.
• Ensure audit work complies with relevant auditing and accounting standards and internal quality procedures.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships through clear communication.
• Identify control weaknesses, business risks and opportunities to add value for clients.
• Assist managers and partners with technical queries and the development of the audit function.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or equivalent) with solid audit experience.
• Current role as Audit Senior, Audit Supervisor or Assistant Manager.
• Proven ability to manage audit assignments from planning to completion.
• Strong client‑facing skills and experience coaching junior staff.
