Bat Detector Ecologist – Highway Project

About the role

We are seeking a Bat Detector Ecologist to support environmental compliance on a major highway infrastructure project in Penrith. You will carry out dusk and dawn bat surveys, analyse acoustic recordings and help shape mitigation measures to keep the works compliant with UK wildlife legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct dusk/dawn bat activity surveys on site
• Deploy, retrieve and analyse data from bat detectors
• Identify bat species from acoustic recordings
• Assist ecological inspections and site monitoring
• Produce accurate field notes and survey reports
• Support the Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) as required
• Liaise with construction teams to communicate ecological constraints
• Follow health and safety procedures at all times

Required profile

• Degree in Ecology or a related discipline
• CSCS / Highways Passport and own PPE
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
• Bat Licence L1/2
• Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings and evenings

Required skills

• Proficiency with bat detector equipment
• Experience using bat detector software for acoustic analysis
• Strong bat species identification skills
• Knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and best‑practice guidance
