Biomedical Support Worker – Microbiology Department

About the role

The Biomedical Support Worker will join the busy Microbiology Department at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Working in a modern medical laboratory on the outskirts of Dumfries, you will support daily laboratory operations and contribute to high‑quality patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with processing of microbiology samples and routine laboratory tasks.
• Maintain and clean laboratory equipment and work areas in line with health‑and‑safety standards.
• Record and manage data accurately, following NHS protocols.
• Support the team across a rotating shift pattern that includes early, late and weekend shifts.
• Complete the Health Care Support Workers portfolio and, where applicable, the IBMS Level 1 portfolio.

Required profile

• Flexible, enthusiastic and self‑motivated individual.
• Willingness to work a 5‑day‑over‑7 shift pattern, including weekends.
• Ability to undertake full training; prior laboratory experience is advantageous but not essential.
• Commitment to completing required professional portfolios.

Required skills

• Basic laboratory techniques and safety awareness.
