Charity Financial Controller

About the role

We are supporting a well‑established charity with UK and international operations in hiring a Financial Controller. Reporting to the Finance Director, you will own the day‑to‑day finance function, delivering accurate reporting, robust controls and insightful analysis to underpin the organisation’s mission.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts for the charity group.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and cash‑flow planning across the group.
• Produce financial analysis, variance reporting and commentary for senior management and trustees.
• Oversee statutory accounts preparation and coordinate the annual audit.
• Manage balance‑sheet reconciliations, including inter‑company balances and restricted funds.
• Supervise VAT returns, payroll reporting and other statutory submissions.
• Compile board reports and financial packs to support strategic decisions.
• Ensure compliance with SORP, Charity Commission, HMRC, Companies House and other regulations.
• Optimise the use of Xero for reporting and internal controls.

Required profile

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA).
• Proven experience in the charity or not‑for‑profit sector.
• Strong background in management accounts, statutory accounts and consolidated group reporting.
• In‑depth knowledge of SORP and charity financial regulations.
• Experience managing or supervising finance staff.
• Hands‑on experience producing statutory accounts and managing year‑end audits under the Charity SORP FRS102 framework.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in Xero.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
