Child in Need Reviewing Officer

About the role

The Child in Need Reviewing Officer provides independent oversight of Child in Need (CIN) plans for children and families receiving services under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989. The role ensures that plans are child‑focused, outcome‑driven and effectively safeguard welfare, while chairing review meetings and monitoring progress.

Key responsibilities

• Chair CIN review meetings in line with statutory requirements and local procedures.
• Ensure the child’s voice, wishes, feelings and lived experiences are central to decision‑making.
• Monitor the effectiveness of CIN plans, assess outcomes and evaluate risk reduction.
• Identify and challenge drift, delay or inadequate planning, escalating safeguarding concerns when needed.
• Provide independent scrutiny of assessments and promote evidence‑based practice.
• Collaborate with social workers, health, education, police and other agencies to ensure multi‑agency planning and accountability.
• Produce clear, accurate records and recommendations, maintaining electronic data in line with data‑protection requirements.

Required profile

• Experience working in child protection, family support or safeguarding environments.
• Good knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and related legislation.
• Ability to chair meetings, facilitate multi‑agency discussions and challenge practice constructively.
• Strong analytical skills to assess plan effectiveness and identify risks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
