Cleaner – HMP Durham (Full‑time, Temporary)

About the role

We are looking for a full‑time Cleaner to join the cleaning team at HMP Durham. This temporary position offers the chance to work within the UK prison service, gaining experience in a secure environment and potentially leading to a permanent role.

Key responsibilities

• Clean office spaces, gatehouse, corridors and visitor areas throughout the prison.
• Use appropriate cleaning equipment and follow prison cleaning standards.
• Maintain security protocols and ensure no breaches occur while working.
• Dispose of waste and maintain hygiene standards in all cleaned areas.

Required profile

• Ability to obtain full prison security clearance and enhanced DBS (arranged by Hays and the MoJ).
• Possess a valid passport or full birth certificate with photo driving licence at current address.
• Provide recent proof of National Insurance and address (within 3 months) and at least two satisfactory references.
• Be level‑headed, security‑conscious, honest and able to follow procedures, reporting any suspicious activity.

Required skills

• Experience in cleaning (preferred but not essential).
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment safely and effectively.
