Commercial Underwriter – Up to £40k

About the role

IPS Group is partnering with a leading insurer to expand its National Underwriting Hub. The Commercial Underwriter will work from Colchester (or Maidstone) on a three‑day‑a‑week schedule, supporting a portfolio of new business and renewal cases while developing technical expertise in commercial lines.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of commercial new business and renewal underwriting cases.
• Make profitable underwriting decisions in line with the insurer’s appetite and guidelines.
• Collaborate closely with brokers and internal teams to drive growth and maintain strong trading relationships.
• Stay informed on market trends and insights to support strategic decisions.
• Provide ad‑hoc support to colleagues on underwriting queries.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of UK underwriting experience, preferably in commercial lines.
• Strong negotiation and broker relationship skills.
• Commercial awareness with the ability to assess and price risk effectively.
• Organised, proactive and capable of handling a varied caseload.
• Working towards a CII Certificate (desirable).
