Costs Lawyer / Solicitor – Associate Level

About the role

Birketts LLP is seeking a motivated Costs Lawyer or Solicitor to join its Sevenoaks office. You will work with a diverse client base, handling cost assessments and negotiations across civil litigation matters.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and assess Bills of Costs and draft Points of Dispute or Replies.
• Advise clients on settlement parameters and negotiate with opposing parties.
• Manage cost budgeting, including Precedent H, Precedent R, or simplified cost budgets.
• Prepare Statements of Costs and provide ad‑hoc cost advice.
• Stay updated on legal developments and share updates with the team.
• Maintain accurate time‑costing procedures and ensure file‑management compliance.
• Supervise junior team members as required.

Required profile

• Strong academic background with a law degree.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in costs law or litigation.
• Prior supervisory experience is an advantage.
• Clear understanding of Civil Procedure Rules relating to costs.
• Demonstrated experience in costs negotiation.
