Counsel, Downstream Europe and South Africa

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join bp’s legal team in London, providing solution‑focused advice to the Downstream business across Europe and South Africa. You will support a range of commercial activities, from mobility and aviation to biofuels, helping the business grow while managing risk.

Key responsibilities

• Act as a trusted legal advisor to bp’s Downstream UK businesses.
• Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements.
• Support projects such as joint ventures, M&A transactions and business restructurings.
• Advise on legal and regulatory matters, including competition, sanctions and compliance.
• Partner with cross‑functional teams to deliver practical, business‑focused solutions.
• Manage competing priorities and focus on high‑impact work.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with relevant legal credentials.
• Several years post‑qualification experience in commercial/corporate law, either in a law firm or in‑house.
• Strong technical legal expertise with a pragmatic, commercial attitude.
• Ability to manage a varied workload, prioritize effectively and adapt to changing business needs.
• High emotional intelligence, strong ethical standards and a collaborative approach.
