Data Protection Officer (DPO) – Global Telecom

About the role

RETN Group is looking for an experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) to lead its global privacy programme across a complex, multi‑jurisdictional telecommunications environment. The DPO will act as an independent advisor, ensuring compliance with GDPR and other international data‑protection laws while enabling commercially practical solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a global data‑protection framework, monitoring regulatory changes and providing risk‑based advice.
• Lead Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and advise on risks associated with new technologies such as AI and analytics.
• Provide privacy guidance for telecommunications products, including handling of customer communications, traffic, usage and location data.
• Oversee international data‑transfer mechanisms and ensure third‑party compliance.
• Manage breach response, regulatory notifications and post‑incident reviews.
• Serve as the primary liaison with data‑protection authorities and coordinate regulatory inquiries.
• Design and deliver GDPR training and awareness programmes to foster a culture of responsible data use.
• Report on key data‑protection risks, remediation activities and compliance status to senior management.

Required profile

• Deep knowledge of GDPR and experience with other international privacy regulations.
• Proven ability to translate legal requirements into practical, business‑focused solutions.
• Experience in the telecommunications sector or a similarly regulated industry.
• Strong analytical skills and the capacity to assess complex data‑processing activities.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with senior leaders and regulators.
