Deputy Director Workplace Operations

About the role

The Deputy Director Workplace Operations will lead the delivery of safe, secure and efficient estate services across HMRC and central government sites. Reporting to senior leadership, you will oversee both hard (maintenance) and soft (cleaning, catering, reception) facilities management, ensuring compliance, continuous improvement and excellent customer experience.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership for a large estates team, ensuring legally compliant building services and health‑and‑safety standards.
• Oversee day‑to‑day service assurance of hard and soft facilities management contracts.
• Manage a delegated budget covering people costs and site‑specific works.
• Ensure Government Soft Landings (GSL) protocols are applied during estate changes.
• Drive sustainable efficiencies and innovation to enhance the customer journey.
• Deliver the annual Business Continuity Bronze Exercise and manage incident response, including out‑of‑hours escalation.
• Collaborate with cross‑government stakeholders and supplier partners to support transformation programmes.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in estates or facilities management.
• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance.
• Budget management and financial accountability experience.
• Ability to engage with diverse stakeholder groups and drive enterprise‑wide initiatives.
• Experience in business continuity planning and incident management.
