About the role
The Deputy Finance Director is a senior finance leader within the Military Strategic Headquarters (MSHQ) of the UK Ministry of Defence. Working across a £30 bn defence portfolio, the role translates complex financial data into clear insight for senior military leaders, helping shape capability, readiness and investment decisions.
Key responsibilities
- Lead financial strategy and shape inputs to planning and investment decisions.
- Oversee in‑year financial management, forecasting and longer‑term planning.
- Ensure strong governance, approvals and compliance with Managing Public Money standards.
- Act as a trusted adviser to senior leaders, providing clear analysis and constructive challenge.
- Create, lead and develop a high‑performing finance team to improve insight, systems and processes.
- Strengthen alignment across Defence and provide consistent performance reporting.
- Deputise for the Finance Director at senior forums.
Required profile
- Extensive experience in senior finance roles within large public‑sector or defence organisations.
- Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders without direct line management.
- Strong judgement, analytical ability and experience building finance functions.
- Excellent communication skills to convey complex financial concepts to non‑technical audiences.
