Deputy Transport Spending Principal

About the role

The Deputy Transport Spending Principal will work across HM Treasury and the Department for Transport (DfT) to implement the recent Spending Review settlement and prepare for the next review. This senior position sits in the Spending and Strategy Branch of the Transport Spending Team, influencing a £30 bn annual transport budget.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and monitor the DfT’s annual budget of approximately £30 bn, including in‑year spending.
• Lead the Transport Spending team through fiscal events and upcoming Spending Reviews.
• Hold the DfT to account for delivering policies that reduce carbon emissions while ensuring value for money.
• Support implementation of the recent Spending Review settlement and preparation for the next review.
• Build and maintain relationships across HM Treasury and with the DfT to broker agreements and common positions.
• Contribute to assessing the economic and financial impact of transport spending on growth and productivity.

Required profile

• Experience working in public finance or Treasury‑related roles.
• Proven ability to analyse large budgets and monitor spending performance.
• Strong understanding of transport policy and its economic implications.
• Ability to lead a team and coordinate across government departments.
