Director of Planning – Strategic Leadership Role

About the role

Penguin Recruitment is supporting a leading multidisciplinary consultancy in the search for a Director of Planning. This senior position will shape the national planning practice, driving growth, market presence and technical excellence across major infrastructure and development projects.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction for the UK‑wide planning practice and develop business growth plans.
• Lead, inspire and develop high‑performing teams across multiple regions.
• Drive work‑winning activities, secure flagship projects and build a strong external profile.
• Act as lead director on complex, multidisciplinary schemes, ensuring commercial performance, governance and risk management.
• Collaborate closely with planning, environmental, engineering and design teams to promote integrated delivery.
• Mentor planning professionals, support talent development and champion an inclusive culture.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience within planning, infrastructure or development consultancy.
• Strong track record of business development and winning major projects.
• Demonstrated ability to manage large, complex schemes and high‑performing teams.
• Excellent stakeholder management and client relationship skills.

Required skills

• Strategic planning and policy expertise.
• Knowledge of sustainable development, Net Zero, ESG and Biodiversity Net Gain.
• Understanding of integrated delivery across planning, environmental, engineering and design disciplines.
