External Communications Officer – Media & Press

About the role

This permanent position sits within the Ministry of Justice Press and Media function, supporting senior officials, Ministers and Number 10 on high‑profile justice issues. You will shape national conversations about prisons, courts and policy reforms by managing media relations and delivering proactive communications.

Key responsibilities

• Handle incoming media enquiries swiftly, drafting accurate responses in collaboration with policy and senior colleagues.
• Proactively pitch stories, write press releases, opinion pieces and other media content to convey key messages.
• Work across communications teams to develop strategies and campaign plans for print, broadcast and digital channels.
• Support the creation of innovative digital formats such as podcasts, digital‑first stories and case‑study driven content.
• Respond to fast‑moving, sensitive queries from justice agencies, gathering information and liaising with journalists.

Required profile

• Experience in press and media relations, preferably within the public sector or a large organisation.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality output on tight deadlines.
• Strong understanding of the modern news landscape and digital communication trends.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to translate complex policy into clear messages.
