Field Interviewer – Inverness

About the role

NatCen is looking for reliable individuals to join its research team in Inverness. As a Field Interviewer you will visit households, conduct face‑to‑face interviews on topics such as health, housing and transport, and capture real‑world experiences using a tablet or laptop.

Key responsibilities

• Knock on doors and introduce yourself to participants who have received a prior invitation letter.
• Conduct structured interviews, guiding conversations while recording responses on a digital device.
• Manage refusals and no‑shows professionally, understanding that they are part of the process.
• Travel to assigned areas, log mileage and travel time, and ensure timely completion of daily interview targets.
• Maintain data quality and confidentiality in line with NatCen’s standards.

Required profile

• Valid UK driving licence and sole use of a car.
• Class 1 business insurance for the vehicle.
• Right to work in the UK and willingness to complete a DBS check.
• Reliable home broadband and a laptop or tablet with a camera.
• At least 18 hours of availability per week with flexibility for weekdays, evenings and weekends.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
• Good time‑management and independent work ethic.

Required skills

• Basic operation of a laptop or tablet, including data entry and camera use.
• Comfortable using simple digital tools for interview recording.

What we offer

• £20‑£30 per completed interview (typical rate).
• Admin fees and holiday pay (12.1%).
• Travel time paid at £4.68 per hour for most projects.
• Mileage reimbursement at 36p per mile (up to 10,000 miles).
• Performance bonuses: £250 after launch, then £250 at two and four months.
• Average hourly rate of about £15.12, with higher earnings for experienced interviewers.
