Field Interviewer (Part‑time) – Brighton

About the role

As a Field Interviewer for NatCen you will visit households in Brighton and surrounding areas to conduct face‑to‑face research interviews on topics such as health, housing and transport. Working with a tablet or laptop, you will capture real‑world experiences that help shape public policy and improve everyday life.

Key responsibilities

• Knock on doors and arrange interviews with residents who have received a prior invitation letter.
• Guide conversations using a tablet or laptop to record responses accurately.
• Manage your schedule to cover weekdays, evenings and weekends as needed.
• Report interview data promptly and maintain confidentiality.
• Track travel time and mileage for reimbursement.

Required profile

• Valid UK driving licence and sole use of a car.
• Class 1 business insurance for the vehicle.
• Right to work in the UK and willingness to complete a DBS check.
• Reliable home broadband and a laptop or tablet with a camera.
• At least 18 hours per week availability and flexibility for varied shifts.
• Strong verbal and written English communication.

What we offer

• £20‑£30 per completed interview (typical rate).
• Admin fees and holiday pay (12.1%).
• Travel time paid at £4.68 per hour for most projects.
• Mileage reimbursement at 36 p per mile (up to 10,000 miles).
• £250 bonus after launch, with additional £250 bonuses at two and four months.
• Average hourly rate of approximately £15.12, with higher rates for experienced interviewers.
