Finance Controller / Director (12‑Month Maternity Cover)

About the role

Petersham Nurseries is seeking an experienced Finance Controller or Finance Director for a 12‑month maternity cover contract. This senior finance leadership position can be full‑time or part‑time (minimum three days per week) and will report directly to the Managing Director.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop the finance function, ensuring robust financial management and efficient processes.
• Partner with the Managing Director and senior leadership team to support commercial decision‑making.
• Produce timely and accurate monthly management accounts, variance analysis and financial commentary.
• Manage month‑end and year‑end close processes, balance‑sheet reconciliations and financial controls.
• Prepare annual budgets, rolling forecasts and long‑term financial plans.
• Oversee statutory accounts preparation and coordinate the annual audit.
• Maintain compliance with UK accounting standards and statutory reporting requirements.
• Analyse sales, gross margins, labour costs and operational performance to improve profitability.
• Manage cash‑flow forecasting, working capital and treasury activities.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a senior finance leadership role (Finance Controller or Finance Director level).
• Strong commercial acumen with the ability to provide strategic financial insight.
• Experience delivering accurate financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment.
• Ability to partner effectively with senior leaders and present financial performance to boards or shareholders.
