Fire Instructor

About the role

The Fire Instructor delivers, coordinates and continuously improves the Firefighter Foundation Development Programme (FFDP) at the Fire Service College. The role provides advanced instructional expertise, quality assurance oversight and leadership within the instructor team, ensuring learners receive consistent, high‑quality training aligned to National Operational Guidance.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver practical and theoretical training across FFDP modules including Breathing Apparatus, Rope & Technical Rescue, Pumps & Water, Ladders, Hose & Hydraulics and Fire Behaviour.
• Conduct learner assessments in line with FSC standards and provide clear feedback and coaching.
• Maintain delivery standards through lesson observation, coaching and feedback.
• Standardise training materials, assessments and practical evolutions.
• Develop and modernise FFDP content, lesson plans, risk assessments and digital learning assets.
• Collaborate with the Digital Learning Team to create online modules, VR content and blended learning resources.
• Lead or contribute to improvement projects that enhance learner experience, operational realism and programme efficiency.
• Act as a competent person for high‑risk training environments, ensuring risk assessments and safe control of practical sessions.
• Represent the FFDP during audits, programme reviews and client engagement activities.
• Support timetables, logistics, resource planning and operational needs through effective communication.

Required profile

• Extensive experience delivering firefighter training at recruit or operational level.
• Competent instructor in key disciplines such as Breathing Apparatus, Rope & Technical Rescue, Pumps/Water, Ladders.
• Teaching qualification – minimum Level 3 Award in Education & Training or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of National Operational Guidance and operational best practice.
• Proven ability to assess, mentor, coach and support learners from diverse backgrounds.
• Advanced instructor qualifications (e.g., BAI, RTCI, EFAD Instructor, CFBTI) and Assessor or IQA qualification.
• Operational experience within a UK Fire & Rescue Service or equivalent emergency services background.
