Graduate Mental Health Assistant

About the role
This graduate position supports a primary school that specialises in children with special educational needs and emotional difficulties. You will work alongside qualified staff to deliver mental‑health and wellbeing interventions for pupils with SEMH, autism and behavioural challenges.
Key responsibilities
- Assist the school’s mental‑health team in planning and delivering daily support for pupils.
- Observe, record and report on pupil behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
- Help implement individual education plans (IEPs) and coping strategies.
- Contribute to group activities that promote social skills and emotional regulation.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists and external agencies to ensure consistent support.
Required profile
- Recent graduate (or final‑year) in Psychology, Criminology, Occupational Therapy or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in education psychology, clinical psychology or occupational therapy.
- Willingness to commit to at least 12 months of continuous placement.
- Empathy, resilience and a genuine passion for working with children with additional needs.
Required skills
- Basic understanding of SEMH, autism and behavioural management principles.
- Effective communication with children, parents and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and follow safeguarding procedures.
