Head of Company & Commercial Solicitor – Department Lead

About the role

The Legists is seeking an experienced Company & Commercial Solicitor to lead its commercial department. This senior position offers a genuine seat at the firm’s leadership table, allowing you to shape strategy, grow the practice and influence the firm’s direction across the South West.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee a diverse corporate and commercial portfolio serving SMEs, owner‑managed businesses and larger commercial clients.
• Advise on mergers and acquisitions, shareholder and partnership agreements, commercial contracts, joint ventures, restructures and corporate governance.
• Develop and execute the department’s strategic plan, identifying new business opportunities and driving growth.
• Mentor, coach and develop junior solicitors and support staff, fostering a high‑performing team culture.
• Maintain and expand client relationships, ensuring delivery of pragmatic, high‑quality legal advice.
• Collaborate with senior leadership on firm‑wide initiatives and strategic decision‑making.

Required profile

• Approximately 8 years post‑qualification experience in corporate or commercial law (guideline).
• Strong technical expertise across corporate and commercial matters.
• Proven track record of developing and maintaining client relationships.
• Interest in leadership, mentoring and team development.
• Commercial awareness with an entrepreneurial approach to business development.
