Head of Governance, Compliance and Risk

About the role

The Head of Governance, Compliance and Risk will report to the Director of Finance and Corporate Governance and lead the development of robust governance, compliance and risk frameworks across Christian Aid and its subsidiaries. This senior position ensures effective decision‑making, protects the organisation’s reputation and supports the Board in delivering its charitable mission.

Key responsibilities

• Support trustee succession planning, Board meetings and the Governance and Nominations Committee.
• Provide expert advice on legal structures for subsidiaries, including Christian Aid Ireland.
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive risk management framework, registers and appetite statements.
• Embed a compliance culture covering data protection, money laundering, counter‑terrorism, sanctions, fraud prevention and misuse of funds.
• Ensure timely regulatory filings with the Charity Commission, OSCR, Companies House and ICO.
• Design and deliver an internal audit programme reviewed by the Audit and Risk Committee.

Required profile

• Significant experience in corporate governance, compliance or risk management, preferably within the charitable or public sector.
• Strong understanding of UK charity law, data protection, AML and related regulatory requirements.
• Proven ability to advise senior boards and work collaboratively with senior stakeholders.
• Excellent analytical, communication and problem‑solving skills.
