About the role

The Head of Midwifery will provide senior professional, clinical and operational leadership for the Trust’s maternity services. Working closely with the Director of Midwifery and the senior leadership team, this role ensures safe, high‑quality, person‑centred care while driving strategic transformation and workforce sustainability.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the maternity workforce, ensuring safe staffing levels and high standards of clinical governance.
  • Oversee quality, safety and governance processes, providing assurance that services are safe, sustainable and continuously improving.
  • Shape the strategic direction of maternity services, balancing day‑to‑day delivery with long‑term transformation initiatives.
  • Act as a senior maternity leader within the local maternity and neonatal system, influencing regional strategy and reducing outcome inequalities.
  • Deputise for the Director of Midwifery as required, supporting senior decision‑making and stakeholder engagement.

Required profile

  • Extensive experience in midwifery leadership with a strong track record in clinical governance, safe staffing and service improvement.
  • Values‑led, trauma‑informed approach to leadership, with a commitment to compassionate, person‑centred care.
  • Proven ability to work in partnership with women, families, communities and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience influencing system‑wide strategy and driving reduction of health inequalities.
