Heritage Consultant

About the role

Penguin Recruitment is supporting a well‑established Town Planning and Heritage consultancy in Bourne End. The Heritage Consultant will work closely with planners, architects and developers to ensure that commercial and residential projects meet heritage legislation and best‑practice standards.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist advice on heritage and archaeology matters to a diverse client base.
• Prepare Heritage Statements, Archaeological Desk‑Based Assessments and Heritage Impact Assessments for planning and listed building consent applications.
• Assess the significance of historic buildings, sites and landscapes and recommend preservation or mitigation measures.
• Liaise with local planning authorities, Historic England and other stakeholders to negotiate heritage‑related planning issues.
• Conduct site visits and heritage appraisals to evaluate development impacts.
• Support clients throughout the planning process, from pre‑application to post‑consent conditions.
• Delegate work to junior team members and contribute to business development activities.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of heritage legislation, national planning policy and industry guidance.
• Experience delivering heritage consultancy services on commercial and residential projects.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients, authorities and multidisciplinary teams.
• Proactive attitude with a focus on quality and compliance.

Required skills

• Preparation of Heritage Statements, Archaeological Desk‑Based Assessments and Heritage Impact Assessments.
• Heritage asset appraisal and significance assessment.
• Understanding of conservation best practices, materials and repair approaches.
