Housing Standards Officer – 37 hrs/week

About the role

Torbay Council is seeking a Housing Standards Officer to join its Housing Standards and Environmental Protection team. You will help protect the health, safety and welfare of residents by delivering a full range of housing interventions and inspections.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct housing inspections and enforce standards in line with HHSRS2 and the Renters Rights Act 2025.
• Investigate evidence, evaluate findings and produce clear reports.
• Work collaboratively with internal partners and external agencies to resolve complex housing issues.
• Communicate findings and recommendations to landlords, tenants and senior management.
• Prioritise workload, meet deadlines and manage pressure in a fast‑moving environment.

Required profile

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a partnership‑focused team.
• Strong investigatory skills and the capacity to handle difficult situations with calm and empathy, especially with vulnerable individuals.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, maintaining confidentiality where required.
• Ability to meet the Enhanced Criminal Record Check requirements.
• Eligibility to work in the UK without visa sponsorship.
