In-house Counsel – Commercial Solicitor (London)

About the role

We are seeking a commercially‑minded solicitor to join the legal team of a dynamic insurance business in London. The successful candidate will act as a trusted adviser to senior management, underwriting teams and claims handlers, delivering pragmatic, business‑focused legal support across the managing agency and its syndicates.

Key responsibilities

• Advise senior management on commercial contracts, new business initiatives and corporate matters.
• Draft, review and negotiate insurance‑related agreements such as Binding Authority Agreements, Terms of Business Agreements and Delegated Claims Administration Agreements.
• Support underwriting teams with policy wording advice and product development.
• Assist claims handlers with legal queries, dispute management and related issues.
• Provide guidance on compliance, employment, tax and company secretarial matters.
• Handle customer complaints and broader regulatory issues.
• Build strong relationships across the business and deliver clear advice to board members and other senior stakeholders.

Required profile

• Minimum 4 years post‑qualification experience (PQE) in private practice or an in‑house legal team.
• Strong commercial awareness and ability to influence senior decision‑makers.
• Proactive, solutions‑focused approach with excellent workload management.
• Experience in the insurance sector, particularly Lloyd’s market structures, is highly desirable.
