Individual Needs Assistant – Secondary School

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated Individual Needs Assistant to support a secondary school in Hastings. The role focuses on helping pupils with identified special educational needs to access the curriculum and achieve their GCSE targets.

Key responsibilities

• Provide targeted small‑group and one‑to‑one support to reinforce key curriculum content.
• Clarify instructions, assist with equipment and materials, and help students complete learning tasks.
• Motivate pupils, offering reassurance and individualized attention as needed.
• Support areas such as speech and language, behaviour, reading, spelling, numeracy and handwriting.
• Liaise with class teachers, SENDCO and other professionals to develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
• Apply agreed behaviour‑management strategies consistently.
• Create and adapt resources to meet student needs.
• Monitor student responses, adjust activities, and provide regular feedback to teachers and SENDCO.

Required profile

• Experience working with children, particularly those with special educational needs.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build supportive relationships.
• Capability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of school policies on child protection, health and safety, behaviour, teaching and learning, and equal opportunities.
